No. Coaches don’t need to know everything about an area to coach a coachee in it.

How Coaching different from Mentoring, Counseling, Consulting or Training?
Coaching has influence from many related disciplines like Philosophy, psychology, mentoring, NLP, counseling and others. Unlike Therapy, Coaching is about moving forward, not analyzing the past. Coaching looks at ‘HOW’ , not ‘WHY’. Coaching does not try and solve people’s personal problems or issues, though sometimes they get solved along the way. Unlike Consulting, Coaches do not give advice. They get people make choices between ideas rather than telling them ‘ what to do’. A consultant does a job for you where as Coach support you to do the job better yourself. A consultant provides facts, figures,reports, information or some other kind of work. A Coach has a conversation to support you to be best you can be Coaching is not training. How is a Coaching session done?
Each Coaching session is of 1 hour duration. Coach reviews Coachee’s actions from previous sessions, listens to Coachee’s insights, awareness, self-realization and asks questions which provide gradual transitional and transformational change in Coachee’s behavior.
How is coaching engagement is structured ?
Coaching engagement is a 12 session engagement (60 minutes per session) consisting of following strategies which are interdependent and overlap with each other during the course of the engagement. Goal setting Strategy Planning Action Planning Asking Thinking and Reflexive questions to bring insights and learning Create Accountability and Responsibility Each of the above strategies uses scientifically proven frameworks and techniques which will make the individuals to focus and develop new capability that will drive individual’s performance and ability to higher level.

There are actions to be done between the sessions, there is someone to answer to for what you say you will do each week. Having a coach really is a commitment and quite challenging , but the good news is most people find the time they have a coach to be incredibly personally rewarding, and they get really fantastic results.
What is the confidentiality of information shared during Coaching engagement?
Information shared in the session is treated with utmost confidentiality. It will not be shared or discussed with anyone without your permissions. Also, Coaches are bound by ethical guidelines prescribed by ICF

Where and how often does the client-coach meeting happen?
Usually the client and the coach mutually decide on meeting at a location that is both comfortable and conveniently accessible to both of them. Meetings may take also place within the client’s office (only if the program is sponsored by the client’s organization) or at the coach’s office. Face–to-face meetings typically average twice per month.
